The timing chain keeps the pistons and valves from striking each other during intake and exhaust strokes. The chain synchronizes the camshaft and crankshaft rotation to open and close the valves at the right intervals. Your Volkswagen owner’s manual will have the recommended replacement schedule. The timing chain is a roller chain that requires lubrication. The chain is more durable than a timing belt, but it still can wear out over time.
