Timing Chain Tensioners

The timing chain in your Volkswagen keeps the pistons and the valves from colliding during the intake and exhaust strokes. It synchronizes the rotation of the crankshaft and the camshaft. That way valves are opened and closed at the right intervals. Volkswagen recommends replacing the timing chain at regular intervals. The timing chain is held taut by a tensioner. This tensioner controls the movement of the engine parts. A tensioner should be set so there is not too much play in the chain, or it is not too tight. If the tensioner is wearing out, your chain will no longer do its job to keep the engine synchronized. The timing will be off.
